As you bring together your loved ones to reconnect—to share the stories of the past and create new memories—consider “Cousin Michelle” part of your planning committee.

Below are a few tips that all families can follow to ensure a successful reunion.

5 Tips for Planning a Successful Reunion:

  1. Stick to Your Date: Once you set your date, don’t change it! You’ll never find a date that fits everyone’s schedule so that everyone can attend.
  2. Start Early: This is really important. One year ahead of time is recommended. People need to be given enough time to save money to travel to the reunion, as well as plan vacations from work (if necessary). Everyone has the right to attend his or her own reunion.
  3. Delegate: Planning an event for a few dozen or a few hundred can overwhelm the best of us – especially as the big weekend approaches. Spread the joy!
  4. Show the Kids a Good Time: They are a continuation of the family and they are the ones who will be planning the reunion in 40 years, so it needs to be a memorable occasion for them.
  5. Tell the Family Story: This is the most important element of the reunion. Tell the story in various ways. Show home movies, scrapbooks and old photos. Create a family tree and have “Aunt Mary” tell those stories we all love to hear!

You have been elected or have stepped up to be the reunion planner for your next family reunion – congratulations!
